What is an oil-in-water emulsion?

An oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion is a dispersed system in which oil droplets are distributed in a continuous aqueous phase. This is the most common type of emulsion in the cosmetic industry.

Most face and body creams, lotions, milks, and moisturizers are O/W emulsions. They are characterized by a light texture, absorb well, and do not leave a greasy film on the skin.

Benefits of O/W

  • • Light texture
  • • Fast absorption
  • • Good hydration
  • • Non-greasy finish

Applications

  • • Face creams
  • • Body creams
  • • Lotions and milks
  • • Moisturizing emulsions
